Bar Graph Used for showing comparisons

C

Circle Graph Used to compare parts to a whole
Conclusion: The final summary of an investigation or experiment
Control Variable: Variables that could change, but are not allowed to; also called constants

D

Dependent Variable In an experimental investigation, what is observed and measured; the data.

E

Experiment Answers scientific questions by testing a hypothesis using a series of carefully controlled steps.

H

Hypothesis A prediction about the relationship between variables and can be tested.

I

Independent Variable The variable that is changed or tested by the scientist; the thing that is different between experimental groups.

L

Length

Instrument is a ruler or meterstick; Basic unit is a meter (m)  Large distances - kilometers (km ) Small lengths - centimeters (cm)  Very small lengths - millimeters (mm)

Line Graph Used for showing changes or trends, usually change over time or distance.

M

Mass Amount of matter in an object ; does not change, Instrument used is triple beam balance Basic unit is the gram (g)

N

Negative Relationship A relationship between two variables such that when one increases, the other decreases.

P

Positive relationship A relationship between two variables such that when one increases, the other increases, or when one decreases, the other decreases.

Q

Qualitative Data that describes qualities or characteristics - color, sound, taste
Quantitative Data that is numerical; usually gathered using tools - mass, distance, volume, time, temperature

R

Relationship The effect of one variable on another; what the independent variable has to do with the dependent variable

S

Science:

A way to solve problems and answer questions; a way of learning about the world around us

Scientific Method Step-by-step procedures of scientific problem solving
SI International System of Units used by scientists around the world. Also known as the metric system
